One of my favorite sites on the Web is called the \u201coops\u201d list:<\/p>\n
http:\/\/micom.net\/oops\/<\/a><\/p>\n The Oops list has many photos and a few video clips \u2013 funny and odd things, many of airplanes in various states of not flying.\u00a0 Give it a look.<\/p>\n So, my \u201coops\u201d is that yesterday I wrote that Nancy\u2019s PICC line had been inserted.\u00a0 I called that one too soon \u2013 sort of a \u201cDewey Defeats Truman\u201d thing:<\/p>\n http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dewey_Defeats_Truman<\/a><\/p>\n I was out-maneuvered by the medical folks.\u00a0 In searching for internal blood loss their tests were coming up with a lot of nothing.\u00a0 Thus, the PICC inserter was pushed away from the insertee and folks showed up (mid-afternoon) with a yummy barium sulphate drink.\u00a0 X-rays have an unfortunate propensity to pass through empty intestines but not through barium.\u00a0 By ingesting and thereby coating the walls of the gastro-intestinal tract (in Nancy\u2019s case now, the small intestines) with barium the snaky little thing shows up clearly on the X-ray pictures.<\/p>\n Barium in its elemental state is not found naturally as it combines easily with lots of other things thereby producing a variety of compounds, one being Barium Sulfate (BaSO4<\/sub>).\u00a0 In most mineral collections you can find Barium-\u201cDesert Roses\u201d and these are a concentric pattern of increasingly larger crystals stained red with iron. \u00a0Picture here:<\/p>\n http:\/\/new.minerals.net\/mineral-variety\/Mineral\/Desert_Rose.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n That is about as familiar as one gets with Barium unless you are lucky enough to be handed a glass of Barium Sulfate liquid mix.\u00a0 This is not anyone\u2019s favorite drink.<\/p>\n So you drink the stuff, gag, spit, and wait.\u00a0 After sufficient time the small intestines are ready for their time before the \u201ccamera\u201d and then you wait some more and they are back for second and third exposures.\u00a0 This exam is sometimes called a \u201cBarium follow through\u201d and in Nancy\u2019s case yesterday the follow-through ended at 10:30 P.M.\u00a0 She had gone a couple of days without real food and her digestive tract \u2013 well cleaned out \u2013 was not prepared for crispy chicken and biscuits.\u00a0 We have one very unhappy Southern belle.<\/p>\n The day ended with no PICC line so that procedure was today but delayed because the PICC-inserter had a full schedule and did get to Nancy until about 3:15 P.M. \u00a0They finished with an X-ray to check for proper placement of the end of the catheter.\u00a0 She called me about 5 P.M. to confirm all is well.\u00a0\u00a0 Except for the known issues with her health they have found nothing new.<\/p>\n I have a car-service appointment (a mile from the hospital) at 10 A.M. tomorrow so we are hoping she might get walking papers by noonish.<\/p>\n We\u2019ll see.\u00a0\u00a0 John<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" One of my favorite sites on the Web is called the \u201coops\u201d list: http:\/\/micom.net\/oops\/ The Oops list has many photos and a few video clips \u2013 funny and odd things, many of airplanes in various states of not flying.\u00a0 Give it a look.
