{"id":303,"date":"2010-02-02T23:40:41","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T06:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rocknponderosa.com\/hultquist\/?p=303"},"modified":"2010-02-02T23:40:41","modified_gmt":"2010-02-03T06:40:41","slug":"tuesday-another-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rocknponderosa.com\/?p=303","title":{"rendered":"TUESDAY   &#8212;   another survey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nancy had a very busy day with therapy in the morning and a trip to Yakima and the doctor\u2019s office in the afternoon.\u00a0 Minus some stitches she returned about 4 P.M.\u00a0 All is well.<\/p>\n<p>The mail brought a survey form from the hospital.\u00a0 We have both been responsible for surveys \u2013 in-person varity and mail type.\u00a0 We are very critical of these one-size-fits-all forms.\u00a0 Acutally, we hate them.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote a response to this one and show it below.\u00a0 I will tell you in advance that Question #8 asks if her bathroom was kept clean.\u00a0 In the ICU there is no bathroom.\u00a0 So, my response:<\/p>\n<p>&gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt; &gt;<\/p>\n<p>Dear Mr. &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-,<\/p>\n<p>My wife, Nancy, entered your hospital early morning on Friday after Thanksgiving via an emergency transfer from Kittitas Valley Community Hospital.\u00a0 Her treatment in the catheterization lab went well and she expressed satisfaction with those that treated her.\u00a0 However, by Saturday afternoon she experienced a complete cardiopulmonary collapse and was in the ICU, completely sedated, for eight days.\u00a0 Before she was brought out of sedation I received, at home, a survey form asking her thoughts on how well she was treated.\u00a0 I returned the form with this message:<\/p>\n<p><em>I suggest you and your staff consider adding another step in your patient surveys protocol.\u00a0 Namely, before sending this form you ought to determine the whereabouts and medical status of the recipient.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Later Nancy was taken from the ICU to the ACU and two days later sent back to the Cath Lab for a temporary pacemaker and then to the ICU again.\u00a0 I received another survey.\u00a0 I wrote a second letter, thought about it for a day \u2013 and never delivered it.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy had open heart surgery on Dec. 29<sup>th<\/sup> and was discharged and sent to a rehabilitation facility on Jan. 20, 2010.\u00a0 Total days in your hospital: 55<\/p>\n<p>The discharge triggered the current survey request.<\/p>\n<p>I can assure you that Nancy is very thankful to be alive and gives the credit for that to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Yakima Regional.\u00a0 Also, I can assure you that answering this survey would require that Nancy make guesses and assumptions and\/or leave things unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>I will provide just two examples of where the survey form, if answered, would suggest a false or inappropriate idea.\u00a0 Question #9 \u201cwas the area around your room quiet at night?\u201d\u00a0 The correct answer is almost never.\u00a0 That sounds bad \u2013 except she was in the ICU for 51 of the 55 days.\u00a0 What should one expect in a place with the key word of the title being \u201cintensive?\u201d\u00a0 Question #23 \u201cthe admission process.\u201d\u00a0 First, she doesn\u2019t remember being admitted in any formal sense.\u00a0 I guess it depends on one\u2019s viewpoint as to whether that is a \u201cbest\u201d or a \u201cworst\u201d experience.\u00a0 If she wasn\u2019t admitted she could have gotten hung up in the system like \u201cpoor Ol\u2019Charlie on the MTA.\u201d\u00a0 I guess I will ask you to look at question #8, also.\u00a0 Knowing she was in an ICU bed for 51 days how would you suggest she answer that?<\/p>\n<p>Also, we think she is \u201cwhite\u201d (Q.#27) but some family members think her DNA is a little suspect.\u00a0 Her mother gave her the middle name \u201cLee\u201d as in Robert E. Lee to compensate, claiming relationship.\u00a0 Touchy subject.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, she does recommend Yakima Regional Medical &amp; Cardiac Center to <strong><em>anyone<\/em><\/strong>, including family and friends (Q.#22).\u00a0 No we do not like these surveys.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently here:<\/p>\n<p>Nancy B.
