Open heart surgery was last Tuesday, so I appoint that as day \u201czero\u201d and today is day 5.\u00a0 They say time rushes by when you are having fun.<\/p>\n
Actually, about half-way through our visit today Nancy said what day is this.\u00a0 We knew it was the 3rd<\/sup> but not the day of the week.\u00a0 Then I remembered I had picked up the Sunday morning paper \u2013 from Yakima \u2013 that we just started (Sundays only) a few weeks before she went to the hospital.<\/p>\n When one is working or has another regular schedule the days are easily kept track of.\u00a0 Not now, with us.\u00a0 Nancy has a TV but isn\u2019t interested \u2013 nothing new there.\u00a0 At home we have a TV set but no reception.\u00a0 Last summer I almost did something about that, namely run a line to an aerial in the middle of the pasture 300 feet out.\u00a0 We bought a converter box also, but it seems a lot of work for such little reward.<\/p>\n We talked with the nurse some today and she claims many people do not remember these days after open heart surgery.\u00a0 Nancy and I are having very normal conversations and the medical staff will converse with us about many different things.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see what Nancy remembers of all this.\u00a0 I do need to take a calendar to her \u2013 at least we would know what day it is.<\/p>\n They did bring Nancy a breakfast she would eat \u2013 an omelette of some sort.\u00a0 I should have thought of that.\u00a0 Yesterday I promised to bring a real ice cream chocolate shake.\u00a0 About a mile before the hospital I stopped and bought one, she ate it, and then they brought lunch.\u00a0 Bad timing.\u00a0 Well, the lunch was green beans, white rice, and meat balls.\u00a0 Good luck with those.\u00a0 On a really hungry day she might eat the meat, the green beans never, and the white rice \u2013 probably not, or not much.<\/p>\n But progress is progress.\u00a0 Day five becomes known as the day she \u2018started\u2019 eating real food.\u00a0 The doctor claims this is necessary for her to flush (my word) the edema from her body and recover the look of a healthy person.<\/p>\n Day 6 or day 7 may be the day she sheds the chest drain.\u00a0 We spoke with the surgeon about it today but he wouldn\u2019t commit.\u00a0 It even seems reasonable now to think of her leaving the ICU and going back to the fourth floor Advanced Care Unit (ACU).\u00a0 Then what?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Open heart surgery was last Tuesday, so I appoint that as day \u201czero\u201d and today is day 5.\u00a0 They say time rushes by when you are having fun.
